Frank Sinatra - Pal Joey

Frank collects a live act

It seems odd to think that Gene Kelly played Joey on Broadway in 1952, as it’s difficult to conceive of anyone except Sinatra in the character, after his successful film role in 1957. You just had to look at the car-crash love affairs and career heartaches to accept that Sinatra’s anti-hero was real (witness his contemporary, real-life subservient role in the very first Rat Pack, bossed by Humphrey Bogart, to get a glimpse of his on-screen inspiration). Rodgers & Hart dragged in tunes from other shows (The Lady Is A Tramp) in addition to the originals (Bewitched, Bothered & Bewildered). One of the best ever soundtracks, the original spent 27 weeks in the Billboard charts.
