Al “Jazzbo” Collins - Fairy Tales For Hip Kids
Calling all hep cats and bohos
With celebrated New York hipster radio DJ Al “Jazzbo” Collins at the mic, this collection is a freewheeling ride back in time to the golden age of bebop. The first half features Jazzbo in best hipster mode as he jive talks his way through an assortment of jazzified fairy tales and other stories, complete with musical accompaniment recorded between 1952 and ’56. Trusty childhood favourites including Little Red Riding Hood, Three Little Pigs, Jack & The Beanstalk and Snow White all get the distinctive Jazzbo treatment, as do subjects as diverse as The Invention Of The Airplane and The Discovery Of America.
With their combination of laconic lounge entertainer delivery and upfront use of hipster talk the remodelled fables sound like surreal cartoon curios from a time now long gone. Far from a parody, the second half of this collection, Al “Jazzbo” Collins Presents The East Coast Jazz Scene, is exactly what it says: a full-blown jazz affair with Jazzbo cast in the role of compare. He introduces a number of contemporary New York acts, including Larry Sonn and his All-Star Band, The Gene Quill Quartet and Coleman Hawkins before an audience made up of listeners to his WNEW radio show.
