Bonnie Bramlett - Piece Of My Heart: The Best Of 1969-1978

Blue eyed soul/country/blues/ gospel crossover

Despite spending some time as a very young Ikette behind Tina Turner, the world wasn’t quite ready for a rootsy white singer, other than Janis Joplin, tackling the sort of material Bonnie Bramlett did in 1969.

The first six cuts here are Delaney & Bonnie tracks, with the pop soul magnificence of Groupie (Superstar) balancing When The Battle Is Over, which inhabits similar territory to The Band. Thirteen Bramlett solo recordings from the 70s follow, showing just how strong and versatile a singer she was as she preaches on (You Don’t Know) How Glad I Am, after rocking out on Crazy ’Bout My Baby and before oozing beautifully through Dylan’s Forever Young. With strong arrangements – with particularly effective brass lines throughout – this collection will appeal to all those who heard Bramlett first time around, and will also be attractive to fans of Duffy and Ms Winehouse.
