Amon Düül With Robert Calvert - Die Lösung
Krautrock meets Spacerock
Amon Düül II members John Weinzeirl and Dave Anderson recorded four albums under the Amon Düül UK banner in the early 80s, at Anderson’s Foel Studios in Wales, including this “supergroup” album. Anderson had played alongside Robert Calvert in Hawkwind circa In Search Of Space, while Weinzeirl had also expressed an interest in collaborating with the legendary “suburban guerrilla”. It took until nearly the end of Calvert’s life for that to happen, first on a track on the Anderson/Weinzeirl Fools Moon LP, then subsequently here, with Ozric Tentacles’ Ed Wynne and Joie Hinton, and Tony Mcphee of The Groundhogs in musical support.
While Calvert’s delivery wasn’t on the level of his Charisma-era Hawkwind work (and, due to his untimely death, a couple of tracks don’t have his vocals at all, with Julie Wareing appearing instead) there’s still plenty of his familiar drawl. The epic two-part Drawn To The Flame is the highlight, made poignant by Calvert’s bipolar star burning out far too quickly. Wynne went on to describe it as a “horrible album with only a couple of moments”, but Calvert enthusiasts will find a lot to relish in their Captain’s later work.
