Gayle McCormick - Gayle McCormick

Lost early 70s femme pop soul

McCormick was the lady from Smith, touted as a good shot for a successful solo career wen she was placed with producer/ writers Lambert & Butler for this album in 1971. They pulled in LA’s finest sessioneers, including good girlie back-up singers, building a fine showcase for her strong, assured and attractive voice with a mixture of covers and their own songs.

McCormick’s Northern dancer, It’s A Crying Shame, has long been deservedly known in clubs, while her cover of Rescue Me and Lambert & Butler’s Save Me sit well alongside this US hit. She handles great songs, such as Leon Russell’s Superstar, Natural Woman and You Really Got A Hold On Me, with a vocal confidence that at least deserved to be held in as high a regard as other better known versions. The closing Gonna Be Alright Now is a beautiful mid-tempo soulful song written by the producers in the tradition of Teddy Randazzo’s best work. It’s worth the price of purchase alone.
