Drumbo - City Of Refuge
Divine mumbo-jumbo from Beefheart’s Drumbo
Anyone expecting John French, aka Drumbo, to slip into quiet retirement after a couple of years fronting a revived Magic Band were, thankfully, wrong. Assisted by the talents of Zoot Horn Rollo and the immense Rocket Morton, along with others from the Captain’s universe, this is a blast.
Bogeyman is a classic slice of Beefheartian whimsy, laid down over a driving, twitching rhythm that reminds you that no one else can even remotely play like this. The Beefheart comparisons are inevitable, but that’s to miss the point: this is their music too. The title track does shake off the legacy of the Magic Band somewhat and heads into ever so slightly more conventional territory, until the towering vocal cuts in. These “new” moments are rare, however, and this is very much the record one would hope to hear.
Underling his unique and probably incalculable importance to Captain Beefheart’s music, City Of Refuge is replete with infectious riffs and hollerin’ that would make the Captain proud of his ever-faithful musical children. If you got ears, you gotta listen.
