Gene Clark - Echoes

New clothes, old Genes.

Is it possible to have too much Gene Clark? Many would argue not, but does the reissuebuying public need a second version of what was reissued last year as Gene Clark With The Gosdin Brothers?

There are a few differences on this package: six extra Clarkpenned tracks taken from Byrds albums Pre-Flyte, Mr Tambourine Man and Turn! Turn! Turn! (a pair each); sleevenotes that are inferior to those written by Clark biographer John Einarson for the other CD; very little information about the tracks and no specific musician credits, so it takes knowledge or detective work to be sure about what you’re listening to (plus the track listing goes wonky for the last three numbers); a couple of demos/ alternate takes.

For the true Clark completeist it might be possible to justify purchase for the latter, but Clark’s legacy is too precious to be treated with anything less than full respect. The recent reissues of With The Gosdin Brothers and The Fantastic Expedition Of Dillard & Clark were done with obvious love, care and attention. Anything that doesn’t match those standards runs the risk of being labelled a cash-in.
