Dave Stewart & His
30-Piece Rock
Fabulous Orchestra
New York Highline Ballroom
17th September, 2008
View: up front
Stewart debuted his mostly female string section, all clad in black behind him, with a wall-of-sound Sweet Dreams. A trio of vocalists then took turns on Lennox leads, including Here Comes The Rain and Would I Lie To You? Although Amy Keys’ gospel wail on the latter was passable, his clunkier songs for Jon Bon Jovi, Mick Jagger and Sinead O’Connor didn’t fare nearly as well, nor did his Barack Obama campaign song, American Prayer. Earlier in the set, though, Stewart offered a fine rendition of Don’t Come Around Here No More, and he scored with Goddess Of Love (Bryan Ferry) and Taking Chances (Celine Dion).
