Joan Baez
26th September, 2008
View: balcony, centre-right
The first night of a tour can be a nervy experience, doubly so with a new band. Therefore, to end a song part way by forgetting the words would shatter many. But such is the professionalism of Baez that, while apologetic, she remained unfazed. Giving her all on classic tracks and several from her new album, Joe Hill proved popular, while she expressed surprise at a request for The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down. She had a fluffed attempt at Billy Rose, not salvaged by a weak Swing Low Sweet Chariot, but the rest was impeccable. Going back to her R&B roots, she gave an exceptional a capella Earth Angel, followed by Honey Love. Her voice and enthusiasm made for a marvellous gig.
