Fotheringay - Fotheringay 2

Thirty-eight years isn’t such a long time for a second album…

The very short-lived Fotheringay was built around the writing and singing talents of Sandy Denny. Though there are only actually two of her own songs here, her impact is felt in the four choices of traditional songs arranged by the band, includin a beautifully restrained Wild Mountain Thyme.

The other main presence is Trevor Lucas, whose baritone and obvious leaning towards writing country-tinged songs such as Knights Of The Road provides a counterpoint to Denny, but also adds a conflict of direction for the band, which was felt by producer Joe Boyd at the time. That said, the overall joys of such a fine group of previously unreleased recordings lovingly exhumed after so long vastly outweigh any questions of split focus. In some ways the two strands come together on the slowed-down version of Silver Threads & Golden Needles, which Denny makes her own with a beautifully restrained delivery. With four past or present Fairporters in the group’s ranks, this is an absolutely essential purchase for any folk, Fairport and related fan.
