Déficit Des Années Antérieures - Action & Japanese Demonstration

The Japanese nebule do their thing

The French band Déficit Des Années Antérieures are one of the most important in the experimental DIY scene. Formed in 1975 by art school students Jean-Luc André, Sylvie Martineau-Fée and Jean- Philippe Fée, they are (amazingly enough) still active today. As new DDAA albums are few and far between, this reissue of their 1982 debut album is most welcome.

Originally privately released on their own Illusion label, the music leans heavily on traditional Japanese theorism (hence the title). On this album, DDAA would best be described as somewhere between The Residents and a traditional Japanese band. Semi-acoustic string instruments are plucked and treated, there are trebly guitar intermissions and chanting, with lots of room for improvisation and collages. This leads to naïve-sounding structures, but listening to the music is still uniquely entertaining and rewarding.

The full original LP is reproduced here with the Musique Et Bruits Du Bas Pa- Tat cassette (seven tracks dating from 1985 and much in the same vein as the album). There are two further bonus tracks from the original LP sessions. For once, a truly essential reissue by one of the most original bands ever.
