The Dave Clark Five - The Hits

But with a difference In the mid-60s, it did no harm for Dave Clark to issue certain of his Five’s UK B-sides and EP tracks as foreign A-sides. 1966’s Look Before You Leap, for example, petered out after just one week in the domestic Top 50, while its flip, the waltztime Please Tell Me Why, floated effortlessly into the higher reaches of the US Hot 100. Earlier, the similarlyburied Because had been pushed in the same way, its No 3 placing reflecting the wisdom of so doing.

The title of this collection is, therefore, justified, containing as it does further non-British chart entries such as Wild Weekend and I’ll Be Yours My Love, as well as items the likes of I Like It Like That, frustratingly unavailable over here until long after our colonial cousins had bought a million copies. Otherwise, all the worldwide smashes – Glad All Over, Bits & Pieces, Catch Us If You Can, you name ’em – are present and correct for marginal Five fans, who may cross the boundary to greater commitment via repeated listening to Dave’s less obvious choices.
