Nic Potter & Friends - Live In Italy
Prog espresso: dense, frothy, dark black
HHH Anyone with the most arbitrary knowledge of prog knows the Italians take it very seriously indeed. One-time Van Der Graaf Generator bassist Potter found himself checking out Italian bands after being invited over there by ex-VDGG reedsman David Jackson. Enlisting a band of fellow Italian travellers, Potter and Jackson performed some shows, largely improvisational yet peppered with a few of the old group’s classics. To hear anyone but Peter Hammill singing Darkness (11/11), Killer and A Sphinx In The Face is a trifle unusual. To hear a woman doing it is at first unsettling, especially that Francesco Arrigoni is Italian, operatic and singing phonetically. Old favourites are rendered new.
Potter is one of the most fluid players to come from the 60s, yet also one of the most under-appreciated. You may not want to reach for Live In Italy frequently, but it certainly is a worthwhile addition to your VDGG alumni shelf.
