Gomez - Bring It On: 10th Anniversary Collector’s Edition
Or take it back…
News that Gomez are to release a 10th anniversary collector’s edition of their Mercury Prize-winning debut album Bring It On will no doubt be met with a mixed reaction. Described by Mercury as “an intriguing blend of swamp blues, barroom rock and eerie power”, the album has long been praised for bucking musical trends and sticking staunchly to the identifiable Gomez sound, despite the ever-changing music scene of the late 90s.
Ten years on, though, far from resurrecting the raw vivacity of early Gomez, Bring It On is beginning to sound stale. A few of the tracks on the bonus disc are worth a listen, particularly the previously unreleased BBC sessions, and the CD also features B-sides from all three singles, 78 Stone Wobble, Get Myself Arrested and Whippin’ Piccadilly.
There’s nothing explicitly wrong with the original album. It includes some really solid tracks, though one has to wonder that, since Bring It On has been the stuff of bargain bins for several years, whether it’s deserving of a reissue.
