Dave Edmunds - The Many Sides Of Dave Edmunds
No need to teach an old dog new hits
The first thing to say about this compilation is that there’s little here that hasn’t appeared on various best of sets already – but it remains an album of exceptional quality. Apart from the excellent power-pop of the previously unreleased (in the UK at least) Every Time I See Her, this is exactly what one would expect.
Again we hear the young Edmunds’ astonishing performance on Love Sculpture’s classic interpretation of The Sabre Dance, his obsession with the 50s on I hear You Knocking and I Knew The Bride, and his interpretation of more contemporary material such as Elvis Costello’s Girl’s Talk. In fact, this has everything the casual listener will want, collaborations with the Stray Cats and Carlene Carter included and, like all of Edmunds’ work, it’s immaculately performed and pristinely produced. In a couple of places (most notably his version of The Ronettes’ immortal Baby I Love You) it could be claimed that Edmunds overreaches himself, and perhaps more of his originals could have been included. Overall, however, this remains a highly accomplished and entirely enjoyable collection.
