Solomon Burke
London Barbican Centre
3rd July, 2008

View: middle

It’s always something special to be in the same room with a legend. And few come larger in status (or girth) than Solomon Burke. Here after his Glastonbury triumph, he delighted with a selection of hits and showstoppers from across his career, as well the fruitiest selections from his recent albums. Sitting on his throne centre-stage, King Solomon mined every single trick in the book, which at times resembled the greatest show on earth, at others a travelling circus set up near the ring-road for a weekend. With his daughter and grand-daughter as backing singers, a tribute Ray Charles on organ and more long-stemmed roses than Covent Garden at Valentine’s, this was a show that left you breathless, mainly, if not always, for the right reasons. Spectacular.
