David Bromberg Quartet - Live New York City 1982
Fan favourite goes legit
Fan favourite goes legit To many, David Bromberg is chiefly known as an associate of Bob Dylan. This recording, however, shows that he not only has a substantial following himself, but a place in the musical landscape that is very much his own. Long available as an official bootleg and distributed by Bromberg through his own website, this is a recording that manages to encompass the entire spectrum of American roots music, while sounding like an absolute blast for all concerned.
Bromberg and his band really attack each number with great gusto, seemingly revelling in each others’ musicianship. At times it seems as if they’re almost daring each other to new heights of virtuosity. They interpret songs by the likes of Furry Lewis, Leroy Carr and Bob Dylan with real passion, and the audience reacts appropriately.
The nature of the music means that this release has limited widespread appeal, but for roots fans it will be a welcome addition to their collection. Bromberg’s new sleevenotes are also a great insight into the music that inspired him and his band.
