Boz Boorer - Miss Pearl

Raw rock oyster opens up to hearty gems

Ex-Polecat Boz Boorer is probably best known for providing the muscular 50sinfluenced musical backing for Morrissey’s smooth vocals, so it will come as no surprise that this album consists of 16 tracks of raw, feral rockabilly. The album seamlessly mixes Boorer originals such as B29 (Droppin’ Bombs On Your Heart) with classics including Jungle Rock and rock’n’roll obscurities such as the title track, originally recorded by the great Jimmy Wages.

Boorer’s guitar playing is as excellent as always and it’s great to hear him really let rip in a way which his day job with Moz only sporadically allows. His rowdy vocals are also more than serviceable, dealing ably with both the bluesy snarl of rockers like Bad Hangover and the tender croon of Deep Shade Of Blue. Throughout, the production is commendably low-fi yet clear – entirely complimentary to the material. Adam Ant’s appearance on Jungle Rock will garner the most attention, but for us the highlight is the rocking recasting of The Ramones’ Rockaway Beach, which brings out the 50s influence of the original while also reminding us of what classic songwriters The Ramones were.
