Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden & The New Wave Of British Heavy Metal
In depth look at the NWOBHM and its greatest export
Don’t let the nearly-but-not-quite Maiden logo on the cover, nor the ominously comprehensive “Not authorised by the current line-up of Iron Maiden, nor by their management or record label” footnote put you off – this is a high quality release. Rather than being the feared unofficial biography, this two-hour film thoroughly explores the NWOBHM, from its roots to decline, with Iron Maiden – typical of the movement, yet transcending it – at its centre.
In all aspects, the documentary shows a real dedication to the subject on the part of the makers, reflected in the intelligent choice of interviewees. These range from scene figureheads such as Paul Di’Anno and Thunderstick of Samson, to less well-known but equally important figures including Diamond Head’s Brian Tatler and Praying Mantis founders the Troy brothers. Moving away from actual musicians, central figures in the scene such as legendary Soundhouse DJ Neal Kay and rock journalist Geoff Barton also add their memories and evaluations of the movement’s achievements. Expert analysis from leading metal scholars of today plus some fun extras round off an exemplary release.
