Jan Garbarek - It’s OK To Listen To The Gray Voice
In which one man pushes himself to the edge
Most famous for his work with Keith Jarrett in the 70s, Garbarek, a jazz saxophonist born in Norway, has been exhibiting his cool tone style with judicious use of space since the early 60s. First issued in 1984, this is an edgy work for Garbarek. He pushes his own style to the limit, almost dissipating that which makes him recognisable with lots of high squeaks, squawks and weird chords, but without ever totally losing it. There are, however, some thrilling moments and some of Garbarek’s best work, despite the odd, less welcome loungecore numbers that intrude amongst the gems. Also playing on the album is bassist Eberhard Weber and multi-instrumentalist David Torn.
