Charles Ives - A Radical In A Suit & Tie: Premiere Recordings

It’s all in the dissonance

The title says it all, and the accompanying photo of Charles Ives in a suit and tie squares with his day job as the director of his own insurance company. Away from the banality of his daily routine, however, Charles Ives led a remarkable double life as an experimental composer struggling not only with his unique musical vision, but to get his work performed.

Way ahead of his time in his willingness to incorporate dissonance and a kaleidoscopic blend of influences, these recordings of what are widely regarded as his masterpieces – the impressionistic Three Places In New England, Symphony No 3 and Piano Sonata No 1 – represent the first chance we’ve had to hear Ives’ compositions, despite them having been written over four decades ago.

During the 60s Ives emerged as an influence on artists as diverse as John Cage, Van Dyke Parks, Brian Wilson, The United States Of America and Frank Zappa. While these Ives originals could never be described as easy listening, the rewards are rich for anyone willing to explore.
