Betty Carter - Now It’s My Turn

A wild ride from a pure jazz singer

Here’s an album that’s relatively little known, by a jazz vocalist who was only really discovered by most musos late in her career, and remains best known for her classic duet LP with Ray Charles. Yet Carter was a great stylist and improviser. Here, on this 1976 release, she is joined by John Hicks (piano), Walter Booker (bass) and an unknown drummer with innovative arrangements of Wagon Wheels and Most Gentlemen Don’t Like Love. Carter twists the melodies, lyrics and tempos like a top-flight sax player. Hang on to your seat.
