Claudine Clark - Ask The Girl Who Knows: The Best Of 1958-1969
Party girl goes pop-soul
If you thought that Claudine Clark only ever stayed in her Party Lights hit zone, this new compilation of her output will come as a pleasant surprise. Her early material on Chancellor Records was pure 1962 party pop but, over the next three or so years, she cut more Motown-orientated material for the Jamie label, and we get a good cross-section here.
Clark wrote some of her own early songs, including the aforementioned hit, but her producers were obviously keen for her to reflect contemporary hit styles. She invades Marvelettes territory with The Telephone Game and Hang It Up and chases The Supremes with Goodbye Mama, utilising a track very close to Come See About Me. She moves towards Gary US Bonds with Dancing Party, while Disappointed is closer to Brenda Lee. The title track finds her developing a more soulful style, and she effectively hollers her way through the postrelationship angst of (The Strength) To Be Strong. With tracks varying from the party pop sides to some decent soul-ish tracks, this will appeal to many.
