Allá - Es Tiempo

Modern Latin psych fails to live up to the past

Latin psychedelica is a tricky genre. There are some utterly original bands out there creating exiting music but, on the other hand, there are many more jumping the Latin bandwagon.

With such albums now available just a click of the mouse away, a combination of Tropicalia, jazz and pop finds it natural home on Es Tiempo, Allá’s debut. This Mexican- American band was formed by the Ledezma Brother, Jorge and Angel, along with vocalist/ guitarist Lupe Martinez. That they took four years to record the album suggests that some of the spontaneity may have been lost.

Although compared to a spiced-up Saint Etienne, Es Tiempo actually features everything from sunny pop, taking in jazzy lounge to more spaced-out instrumentals, making it a bit directionless. Promising as this debut is, Allá still have a long way to go.
