Collectable UK
Labels Part 9: B&C;
& Part 10: Charisma
by Jorn R Andersen, Haaken Eric Mathiesen
Mini-bibles for label obsessives
Norwegian discographer Jorn Andersen is a man on a mission: to help collectors identify true originals. As he says, “I get sick of all these so-called serious dealers on eBay selling later pressings as originals.” His lively, fact-packed booklets on classic UK labels certainly live up to his aims, and here are the two latest. B&C was a quirky, eclectic label which dabbled in reggae, soul and rock’n’roll but the emphasis here is on the rock and folk LPs, from Atomic Rooster, Spirogyra, Steeleye Span and cult names such as Shelagh McDonald, Keith Christmas, Marc Ellington and others.
B&C’s more famous offshoot, Charisma, featured the likes of Lindisfarne, Van Der Graaf Generator, Rare Bird and, of course, Genesis. Both labels are concisely but lovingly documented here, with history, trivia, personnel, and minutely-detailed label data fleshed out with adverts from the music papers of the day.
