Marc Bolan - The Celebration Concert

All-star tribute to the 20th Century boy

Filmed at the Shepherds Bush Empire last September to mark the 30th anniversary of Bolan’s death, this concert was pretty much a typical show by the tribute band T.Rexstasy with a few special guest singers – and therein lies the problem. While no one should doubt the sincerity of those taking part, only about half the line-up make any real impact on proceedings.

Marc Almond appears to be genuinely honoured to be part of the affair, his acoustic interlude culminating in a dramatically powerful Life’s A Gas, the clear highlight. Kudos also to Bolan’s old squat chum Linda Lewis for belting out Metal Guru and Children Of The Revolution with such gusto.

Mungo Jerry’s Ray Dorset (amateurishly reading lyrics from what looks like a napkin) and Shakin’ Stevens, however, fail to capture the spirit of Bolan’s songs. Ultimately it’s left to T. Rexstasy’s extraordinary frontman Danielz to reconnect with the party vibes, keeping the crowd in a steady state of glam bliss. A surprise appearance by Bolan’s widow Gloria Jones duetting with Almond on Tainted Love also goes down a storm.
