Genesis - When In Rome 2007

You can own a 21st Century drum duet! Plus some hits

Genesis’ 2007 return was like their career itself: greeted with little fanfare, ignored by the critical elite, loved by the masses. Now looking even more like a kindly firm of vaguely hipster lawyers with a plasterer for a front man, When In Rome showcases the undeniable power of Genesis’ live show.

This meticulously constructed DVD, directed by David Mallet, leaves few stones unturned. On stage, the balance between the classic 1973-76 era and more recent material is well-chosen. The fast-forward button allows fans who have issues with earlier/later stuff to entirely avoid respective eras. The visuals are dazzling, and the DVD is a reminder for all those who haughtily dismissed the reunion that it actually may have been worth pitching up to see. I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe) is especially great, with huge visuals of all stages of the band on the screen behind, complete with hairy flat-capped 1976 Collins accompanying 2007’s on-tambourine gymnastics. Each song has its own minidocumentary segment, which can, at times, leave the viewer wanting a little mystique re-injected into things. The accompanying documentary filmed by Anthony Mathile is pretty exhaustive too, taking the band from first reunion rehearsal in 2006 to the Rome show 10 months later.
