Jim Noir - Jim Noir
Further pop genius from Britain’s finest one-man band
You could barely be forgiven for not loving Jim Noir; for no other reason than that he’s such a great little composer and songwriter. Every track he cuts is a low-key portmanteau symphony – quirky, melodic and thick with layers of harmony (never cute, mind you). He finds profundity in the most casual everyday observances, be it family holidays or the quality of cassette recordings.
He’s something of a Mancunian Ray Davies in this respect – resolutely down-home but blessed with a captivating imagination, as if his hands were in the kitchen sink and his head in the cosmos. Jim’s first album proper (his debut, Tower Of Love, was really a collection of three collectable vinyl EPs plus bonus cuts) is wonderful stuff and just what needed to be done – a little bigger, a little bolder and a little more cohesive than before. Think of it as the Jim Noir we love, but Jimmer and Noirer.
