Love - Forever Changes: Collector’s Edition

“I’ve been here once, I’ve been here twice…”

Forever Changes needs little introduction. The question on most discerning RC readers’ lips is whether or not it merits another purchase following Rhino’s excellent 2001 reissue. The simple answer is, unfortunately, “no”. Only the total completist would be satisfied by the extra cuts exhumed for this 40th anniversary edition.

There’s absolutely no doubting the quality of the original. It’s an unparalled combination of a dexterous melodic wit, ambitious arrangements that have bewitched generations and a lyrical vision veering between the unsettling and sensitive. However, this issue feels exploitative, especially as the second disc is comprised mainly of alternate mixes and material previously collected. The mixes add little to the album other than fulfilling an initial curiosity. A genuine obscurity is the cover of Sam The Sham & The Pharaohs’ 1965 smash Woolly Bully, but rather than the R&B stomper anticipated, it’s a ramshackle run-through evidently more fun for those involved in its creation than it is to listen to.

Despite this, Forever Changes remains a benchmark release and anybody tuning in for the first time will be well served. Rhino’s usual standards apply here, with well-annotated sleevenotes and impeccable sound. For existing fans, however, this feels like one reissue too far.
