View: resting the weary bones in a balcony seat

The Mozfather’s stint at London’s Roundhouse was truncated by a dodgy larynx, but by the time he came north he was in fine fettle, powering through a career-spanning performance that effortlessly mixed new material and classic oldies. When supporting 2005’s Ringleader Of The Tormentors album, his setlists occasionally dragged, but a fired-up backing band kept tonight’s momentum much higher. Promoting a greatest hits album, time was still found for five new tunes, all of which suggested the next album may have a bit of spark. Of the back catalogue, How Soon Is Now has become a monstrous slice of heavy psychedelia; Please, Please, Please... still a teary-eyed curtain-closer. Morrissey can still inspire a decent stage invasion – although some original fans are finding the climb onto the stage more difficult than they used to.
