John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers - A Hard Road
Green fingers help pluck this one from obscurity
Mayall is probably more famous for the company he kept than for the quality of his own musicianship, acting as father figure for some of the emerging 60s talent who all played with him in his bands, from Eric Clapton to Aynsley Dunbar. It’s often forgotten that Peter Green, soon to co-found Fleetwood Mac, joined Mayall on this album, which was originally released in 1967. While Mayall provides solid, though unremarkable, British blues backup with a cover of Freddie King’s Someday After A While (You’ll Be Sorry), Green’s contribution makes this album come alive. Both The Same Way and Supernatural feature his trademark guitar technique, as well as the general verve and dynamism of his overall performance. Perfect for Mac completists.
