Brotherhood Of Man - United We Stand
Over-safe pop from ’69-’71
This was the initial session singer-based incarnation of this group – and not the Eurovision lot, although the feel of the music is not vastly different. These recordings were built around Tony Hiller’s songwriting and production, and the performing talents of Tony Burrows, Johnny Goodison and Sue & Sunny (aka The Usual Suspects). Consequently, everything is polished and well presented, but totally lacking in any surprises, excitement or notable arrangements. Everyone stays firmly in their comfort zones amid the usual strident and predictable Brit arrangements. The early hit, United We Stand, reminds us of certain aspects of 60s music, but very far from the groundbreaking approaches found elsewhere. The package includes six Sue & Sunny recordings, which will please a few girlie collectors, but it’s overall too safe and samey.
