Black Francis - Svn fngrs

Seven cardinal virtues from former Pixie

This troubled little seven-track mini-album is nowhere near the best of Black Francis’ solo material. Nevertheless, it delivers some sharp, sparsely produced tales of sex, death and birth, capturing some of the grating energy of his sophomore solo effort, Teenager Of The Year.

The present Black Francis incarnation is a three-piece, so there are relatively few screeching leads, and no guest appearance from Joey Santiago to get excited about. But Francis is on good form and captures an essence of former glories, particularly The Tale of Lonesome Fetter, driven by its simple Kim Deal-a-like bass line, the visceral Garbage Heap and the earthy garage of I Sent Away, reminiscent of the rockier moments from Dog In The Sand.
