Don Airey - A Light In The Sky

Deep Purple keysman’s second solo effort

While K2: Tales Of Triumph & Tragedy was a hard rock set, A Light In The Sky is altogether more, well, cosmic. The 17 tracks mix Vangelis-like sci-fi atmospheres, as on the opening Big Bang, with up-tempo tinkling of the ivories in the Jean Michel Jarre vein, as per Ripples In The Fabric Of Time. Elsewhere, hints of the day-job emerge for meatier numbers, such as Space Troll Patrol (don’t ask), and vocals are supplied by Krokus’ Carl Sentence and, joining his Thunder colleagues in the rhythm section, Danny Bowes (on Love You Too Much). Then again, Don’s fusion past is not forgotten, and there are numerous jazzy moments (showcasing Primal Scream’s Darrin Mooney), from Pale Blue Dot to the Big Crunch. One that you’d have to be in the mood for, but a stratospheric trip nonetheless.
