Genesis - Remember Knebworth 1978

A curious memento of Genesis’ only UK concert of 1978

Somewhere between tenuous cash-in and vital historical document, Remember Knebworth 1978 combines a fascinating archival documentary about that year’s concert and a new interview with its legendary promoter, Freddy Bannister. The documentary looks like it could have been shot anytime between 1948 and 1978, its washed-out colour underlining just how grim the late 70s were, and just how exciting it was to see a laser back then.

As for the promise of it being a Genesis DVD, although the package painstakingly suggests it only features clips of them, a casual fan may assume otherwise. There are a few decent interviews with them, the promo shot at the soundcheck for Many Too Many and live footage, shot though an old pair of tights, of The Lady Lies, surely one of their worst ever numbers, with Phil mugging away. One of the grimmest photo galleries you’ll ever see (soft shots of Brand X from a quarter of a mile away – just what John Goodsall fans have been crying out for) is redeemed by a replica of the day’s programme. With all the prices of the buffet being laid out for you (not a single noodle in sight, but a choc roll for 10p), it takes us back to far, far simpler times.
