Gene Clark - Gene Clark
Solo debut from underrated country-rock talent
Despite enjoying success as a member of The Byrds for two years, Gene Clark was one of the most underrated artists of his time. Clark’s solo LPs were noted for their guest appearances (in this case The Gosdin Brothers, although Byrds Michael Clarke and Chris Hillman, plus future Byrd Clarence White and future collaborator Doug Dillard, join in the fun). Originally released in 1967, this is Clark’s first and best solo outing and one that, unsurprisingly, ferries over elements from Clark’s work with The Byrds, combining both folk- and country-rock along with pop tunes. When originally released, the album bombed, but it deserved more – a lot more.
