Jersey Boys: The Story of Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons
by David Cote

A half-and-half joyride through the Seasons

This a gorgeous, full-colour hardback presentation of the Valli/ Seasons story goes some way to including the warts that were undoubtedly there even before they struck with 1962’s Sherry. It successfully marries the story of the hit group, from their start among the turnpikes and downbeat diners of New Jersey, with that of the production of the musical of their lives, Jersey Boys, which opens in London in March. Quotes from group members, cast members and executives are intermingled and build up to the second half of the book, which presents the show’s entire script.

Seasons fans will be delighted with the rare photos and memorabilia, and the spotlighting of the still vastly underrated Genuine Imitation Life Gazette album. They’ll also be frustrated with what isn’t said, especially after a few tantalising glimpses of the group’s early days amid Italian-American “business” organisations. We learn how two of the early group were imprisoned, but with only vague allusions as to why, and the sudden departure of vocal arranger Nick Massi remains sadly under-explained. It’s not the last word (that would take more words and research), but for now this is hugely attractive for all long-standing fans.
