Dory Previn - The Art Of Dory Previn

Angels, attics and iguanas abound

Let it be clear from the start that Dory Previn stands apart from the great majority of female singer/ songwriters by dint of the sometimes confessional nature of her lyrics that draw from her own, and others’, experiences. Her modern equivalent would, arguably, be Tori Amos, but Previn’s work comes from a much earlier time.

This 17-song compilation, the first with Dory’s assistance and approval, draws from her four early 70s albums, records that presented her work with comparatively gentle orchestrations, often including harpsichords, brushed drums and an acoustic backwash. The power of her songs lies in their literary storytelling, sometimes far removed from standard construction, presenting the most unusual scenarios, with imagery that sucks you into ever-closer listening. It’s difficult to spotlight individual tracks, as each is valuable in its own right, though the cautionary tale, Beware Of Young Girls, and the gentle Lady With The Braid make for more easy entry points than some. One day, perhaps with this intelligent collection, Dory’s worth will be fully recognised. Please investigate.
