Manic Street Preachers - Send Away The Tigers

Eighth studio effort from everpolitical Welsh trio

At first, the Manics’ latest 10-track outing might seem a tad lightweight, at least compared to some of their more edgy treatises of latter years. But while the opening title track, with its sweet, almost Oasis-like harmonies, lilts by, it belies a set of songs that possess archetypal polemics, albeit delivered without sophistry and somewhat less fervently than in the past. Still, the stripped-down approach to the wordy Underdogs and 60s keys of Your Love Is Not Enough give way, eventually, to some passionate uptempo imploring on Rendition (a song about CIA secret prisoner flights), the Slash-like guitar and Queen-esque chorale of Autumnsong, and the singalong tale of bullying, Winterlovers.

The palette diversifies with Eastern strings, hints of ELO (The Second Great Depression) and a knowing snatch of Lee Harvey Oswald spoken-word on I Am Just A Patsy, while the hidden track, Working Class Hero, winds things up as you’d expect. If not as immediate, as alluring a set as ever.
