Clydie King - The Imperial & Minit Years

Classic 60s tracks from back room lady

This will delight many female vocalist fans, as it is a long overdue compilation of Clydie King’s fine material. Kicking off with four Spectorised Imperial label songs produced by Jerry Riopelle (of which The Thrill Is Gone and Missing My Baby are well loved by fans), the lesser-known If You Were My Man and My Love Grows Deeper are much more than regular B-sides.

Thereafter there are a couple which King cut with the still underrated Jimmy Holliday, including the bouncy Ready Willing & Able, followed by the Van McCoy-inked dancer The Shing-A-Ling, and a splendidly sultry Love Now, Pay Later. Eight previously unissued tracks from 1968 show how versatile King was, ranging from a cover of Ode To Billy Joe, and a most acceptable slab of folk-rock with Phil Ochs’ When In Rome. This is absolutely essential for all girlie and soul fans, and should attract many others besides. Terrific.
