Icarus - The Marvel World Of Icarus

Marvel-ous meeting of prog band and superheroes

When researching a book on the history of music and comics, Can Rock & Roll Save The World?, this writer tried to find out who Icarus were, and why their Marvel World Of Icarus sold so poorly when released in 1972. I came up against a blank wall. Now all is revealed on this superb reissue. Hats off to David Wells for fantastic liner notes and interviews with guitarist John Etheridge and bass player Jim Wyllie, covering how the band came together and almost toured Spain backing Billie Davis! As concept albums go, recording songs about Marvel characters seemed a sure-fire winner, although consensus now suggests the album stiffed due to poor promotion while the band were touring Romania, as opposed to being at the wrong end of a Marvel Comics lawsuit.

The music is a strain of almost commercial prog-rock, with singer Steve Hart sounding like Captain Beefheart on the driving, compelling beat of Fantastic Four. Tracks such as Black Panther, Thor and Hulk are also excellent. To make this an essential purchase there are bonus tracks from the US-only single Love Is A Thing and the debut non-Marvel inspired Icarus single The Devil Rides Out (1968), which today changes hands for £50.
