Genesis - Live Over Europe 2007

They can’t dance, but they can play like hell

For their fourth official live outing, the reconstituted Genesis threesome, Collins, Rutherford and Banks (backed by old hands Daryl Stuermer and Chester Thompson), put on an audio-visual spectacle, with the audio side of that captured here in pristine fashion with 21 cuts from across their catalogue. There’s a mix of instrumental virtuosity (as on the opening Duke’s Intro), radio friendly pop-rock (the clapalong Invisible Touch) and their evergreen proggier efforts (the pomp majesty of the closing Carpet Crawlers and semi-acoustic Ripples).

The blend works well, with Collins’ distinct tones topping the slick-as-oil synth-and-rhythm foundation, adding his own deft mockney wit to such gems as Firth Of Fifth and Mama. Genesis combine future-sound on Land Of Confusion (Banks underpinning the singalong refrains) and Home By The Sea, with eerie otherworldy 70s tones on the crescendo of the In The Cage medley. The mood is lightened by Follow You Follow Me and I Know What I Like. While Hold On My Heart teeters into solo Collins soppiness, the likes of Los Endos redress the balance. A stick/ drum solo is less impressive to the ear the eye, but that’s a minor quibble.
