James Taylor - Squibnocket

A class act crooning on his own doorstep

Regarded by some as the most laidback man ever to pick up a guitar, Taylor’s laconic style and gentle songs are perfectly suited to the downhome surroundings of this DVD: a filmed rehearsal of his band in a barn on his Martha’s Vineyard property, just prior to a lengthy world tour. There are few surprises to be had. Rather, Squibnocket serves as a relaxed portrait of a musician already adored by a hardcore following. Originally released on VHS in 1993, it merely reiterates Taylor’s appeal for those who’ve loved him for years. Don’t expect earth-shattering revelations or insights into his working practices. Just wallow in the smooth vibes and embrace the urge to sing along to Fire & Rain, You’ve Got A Friend and countless others. The interview segments are hugely enjoyable, not least for the subject’s bemused attitude to his own fame. Taylor never changed the world, but he’s a dab hand at describing how beautiful it can be.
