Various Artists - Thankful

Ten top reasons to show our gratitude…

Some labels come up with any old excuse to churn out yet another compilation. The successor to Thank You, which celebrated this New York label’s 50th release, Thankful, marks Temporary Residence’s 100th. Marvellously mismatched, this is one beautifully blurred collision of leftfield genres, straddling folk-rock and post-rock, via electronica, dub, and back around again. Crucially, all 10 tunes are new and exclusive, and though they are previously unreleased, these are far from unwanted off-cuts. From the unsettling My Bloody Valentine ambience of Eluvium, to Cex’s jarring electro juggernaut and the tortoise in torment of Sleeping People, Thankful dangles in that great divide between sonic pleasure and pain. Better still, however, is the car-crash country of Will Oldham relations, The Anomoanon, and Caroline’s Wonderlust, which twinkles with wide-eyed Björk-ish innocence. For those alone, we’re very thankful, indeed.
