Pete Townshend - The Iron Man
Bonkers operas and introspective demos. Yum.
No one can suggest Townshend has ever been anything but ambitious. Forever chasing his next opera after Tommy, we had the aborted Lifehouse (which went on to inform most of the rest of his work) Quadrophenia, White City, The Iron Man, Psychoderelict and now Wire & Glass. The Iron Man is a pretty good excursion. Based on Ted Hughes’ novella and released in 1989 when nobody really cared, it contains some moving passages and a stellar supporting cast. The Who reform on a couple of tracks (though the less said about the cover of Arthur Brown’s Fire the better) and John Lee Hooker voices the lead role with aplomb. It remains the only place where you’ll hear Nina Simone singing about fast food.
