Gigi & The Charmaines - Gigi & The Charmaines

Girls covering the whole gamut

Drawn from The Charmaines’ 60s output on Columbia, Date, Dot and Fraternity, this collection shows just how versatile the Cincinnati group was. Kicking off with their mid-60s Columbia sides popular with Northern soul collectors, the likes of Guilty and Poor Unfortunate Me get prime positioning, before a previously unissued I Don’t Want To Lose Him, that attracts further interest. Earlier sides, such as the Shirelles-influenced Where Is The Boy Tonight, their original version of On The Wagon (later covered by the Pre-Spector Ronettes) and their original version of GI Joe show that The Charmaines were real contenders in the girl group stakes. They also provided many good backing vocals for others during their time at Fraternity. Several of these, for artists such as Lonnie Mack, Max Falcon and Kenny Smith, appear here, with the delightful Don’t Take Away Your Love tucked away as a goodie near the end. Enhanced by memories from Gigi herself, this is a delight for Northern fans and all girl group collectors.
