Foo Fighters - Skin & Bones

Foo Fighters ‘unplugged’

It’s still odd to think that the drummer of one all-pervasive rock band went on to front another megalithic group. Dave Grohl might not be as successful as Kurt Cobain, but this album makes you stop and wonder at the Foos’ massive status, as well as their well-crafted music. It was recorded on the band’s first ever tour with its expanded eight-piece line up, including ex-guitarist Pat Smear, and contains songs from three sold-out performances at Los Angeles’ Pantages Theatre. The title is apt, as the sound follows the stripped-down style of last year’s In Your Honour Disc Two. Indeed, half the songs are culled from that record, while the rest are chosen for their poignancy or versatility. Fan favourie Nirvana B-side Marigold is present, alongside the Foos’ own classic Everlong. While there are no new songs, the reinterpretations are intense and the sound quality is great, with subtle dynamics and crowd screams. The songs are performed with real heart and recall Nirvana’s legendary MTV Unplugged performance. Proof that Foo Fighters are masters of looking inwards, as well as rocking out.
