Azymuth - Azymuth

Way cool space-funk debut from legendary Brazilian unit

In its first release outside of Brazil in 1975, Azymuth’s first effort proves to those only familiar with their disco-era international successes that there was far more to Azymuth than trilling, featherlight jazz-samba. Though a clean, airy production, their debut is not without the firm touches associated with the street-funk of the day. A dreamy Latin Manzel, if you will.

Their trademark zooming ARP synth sweeps are already in place, but the jazziness here is more soulful bump than flamboyant twiddle, and on the rocking Wait My Turn and Periscpio (a soughtafter, grimy club spin) the band positively thumps. As the Far Out label is wont, a bonus disc of remixes from today’s nu-jazz-funk everymen is included; and they’re decent thanks to prime source material. The original album needs no gilding, though. A highly recommended purchase, especially now that the days are warming.
