Bobby Bare - Down & Dirty… Plus
A hoe-down you can have in your own home
Ever been to a bar or pub on the off-chance you’ll catch a great country band? Ever been disappointed? Here’s the remedy. Get some tinnies in, set a stool nearby, put this on and let yourself go (smoky atmosphere optional). Recording Down & Dirty in a studio, with an audience present, Bare got the best of both worlds: clear recordings that capture a raucous live vibe. This is like the best bar band you’ll ever hear: a front man with a great voice and the ability to hold a crowd in the palm of his hand, backed by tight and talented sessioneers. Sadly, none of Bare’s crew is namechecked, but they more than do the job. Think of Kris Kristofferson and you won’t be a million miles out. Same kind of songs (some are KK’s, actually), delivery, and outlaw vibe. You get the impression that it’s not just alcohol and cigarettes contributing to the bliss. The ‘Plus’ element comprises studio tracks on which Bare shows a more reflective side to his work. Even so, the good-time feeling shines through. None of it is groundbreaking, but, if it doesn’t make you feel better, we’ll eat our Stetsons.
