The Rolling Stones - Rolled Gold
The tightest promo of the year award goes to…
Anyone who thinks the life of an RC reviewer is drenched with tasty advance promos should know that, although that can be the case, this representation of the latest Stones recycling mission consists of mere snippets of the relevant songs, edited together like Stars On 45. That these classics are so embedded in the national consciousness they only need a few seconds to nudge the memory is the irritating idea, which highlights the nature of this compilation. Originally released in 1975 and now reissued with 16 extra tracks, it’s, put simply, another repackaging job which the Stones had nothing to do with then and haven’t now. In the 70s, Decca seemed to shove out a shoddily-packaged Stones combination every month. But Rolled Gold’s resurrection as a great “lost” Stones album is getting the works, coming as CD, USB and four vinyl albums, which will be the one to get RC readers fuming. Once again, it’s the Stones completist, and there are plenty of those, being targeted to hit their bank balance. The enormity of the music is beyond question but surely this is pulling those poor, wrinkled udders much too tight?
